Sometimes, a home can take on an unpleasant smell or feel devoid of fragrance. But don’t worry, there’s a simple solution: plant a lemon tree in a pot. Yes, you don’t need to rely on artificial air fresheners—just a touch of nature can do wonders.
Why Lemon?
Lemon is not just an excellent fruit but also offers many practical benefits. According to the Spanish Nutrition Foundation, lemons are rich in B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, and B6), vitamin C, and vitamin P. But beyond being a nutritious fruit, lemons have powerful disinfectant properties. They can eliminate bacteria and fungi, and their fragrance is an effective odor neutralizer. In fact, it can destroy almost any unpleasant smell, including humidity and fishy odors!
How to Plant Lemon in a Cup
Step 1: Prepare the Seeds
Start by removing the seeds from about 5 to 10 ripe lemons. Make sure the seeds are whole and undamaged. Then, place them in a glass of clean water to hydrate.
Step 2: Select the Seeds
Observe the seeds. Some will float while others will sink. The seeds that sink to the bottom are the ones you want to keep. These are the viable seeds.
Step 3: Drain and Prepare the Soil
Drain the seeds and carefully remove any excess water with a paper towel. Afterward, discard the water from the glass and fill it with damp, black soil (ensure the soil is moist but not overly wet).
Step 4: Plant the Seeds
Arrange the seeds in a circular shape, ensuring they cover most of the soil’s surface area in the glass or pot. Then, cover the seeds with a small layer of soil or etch (a thin covering of soil).
Step 5: Care for the Seeds
Within 9 to 15 days, you should see your first little plants sprouting. At this stage, water them with a spray bottle every morning, and if possible, in the evening too.
Step 6: Transplant the Seedlings
As the seedlings grow, they may become crowded. When this happens, transplant them individually into larger pots to give them more room to grow. Their growth will be slow, taking about 6 to 7 months to reach their maximum height, which will be around one and a half meters—perfect for indoor spaces!
Benefits for Your Home:
Once fully grown, your lemon plant will not only serve as a beautiful decorative piece but also as a natural air purifier, making your home smell fresh and citrusy all year round. Enjoy the fragrance and natural beauty of your own homegrown lemon tree, while also benefiting from its disinfecting and odor-neutralizing properties!
